WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — As you drive around Wichita, you may see someone on a street corner with a sign asking for money for a child’s funeral. The Wichita Police Department says it appears to be a scam.

The WPD says it is getting reports about people standing in medians and at corners and holding the sign. The sign says the person needs money for a funeral for 8-year-old Carla, who allegedly died of leukemia.

Wichita police officers questioned a man who was holding the sign. He told officers that Carla was his niece, but the officers said he could not provide any other photos of the girl. The man said he came to Wichita from another state at a friend’s suggestion.

The WPD investigated and learned that the Tulsa Police Department had reported a similar scam involving identical signs but with a different child’s photo.

“Please be aware—this appears to be a scam,” the WPD said on social media.
