Television images show National Assembly Speaker Woo Won-shik declaring the state of emergency invalid after the vote. 190 of the assembly’s 300 members were present during the vote.
President Yoon Suk-yeol announced on Tuesday that a state of military emergency would be imposed in the country to protect the country from pro-North Korean forces.
But the announcement has been met with strong protests both from the opposition and from the leader of the president’s own party.
On the night of Wednesday local time, the elected members of the National Assembly gathered for an extra session where they voted to block the state of emergency.
