Southern California Edison considers power outages for thousands due to wind, fire danger

Southern California Edison is considering power safety shutoffs for more than 100,000 customers across the region Friday.

Power shutoffs are considered when weather conditions lead to heightened wildfire risk.

Only a handful of customers in Los Angeles, Inyo and Mono counties were under a safety power shutoff as of early Friday afternoon; however, tens of thousands more outages in multiple counties were being considered, according to the utility.

Here’s a look at the Power Safety Shutoffs being considered as of 12:15 p.m.:

  • Inyo County: 359 customers
  • Los Angeles County: 23,955 customers
  • Orange County: 7,794 customers
  • Riverside County: 27,681 customers
  • San Bernardino County: 47,657 customers
  • Ventura County: 14,090 customers

The warnings come as much of Southern California is under a red flag warning due to Santa Ana winds and warmer temperatures.

“If fire ignition occurs, conditions are favorable for rapid fire spread and extreme fire behavior which would threaten life and property,” the National Weather Service stated.

The gusty winds should begin to taper off by Sunday.
