The recapture of the city of Singa, the capital of the state of Sennar, is a strategically important victory for the government army in the 19-month war with the paramilitary RFS force.
The city is located at an important road connection between government-controlled areas in eastern and central Sudan.
In June, the RFS took control of Singa and another town in the state after fierce battles with the government army. About 726,000 people were forced to flee the fighting, according to the UN.
The government army in Sudan, led by coup general Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, has been at war with former allied warlord Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo and his RSF militia since April last year.
Since April last year, the war has claimed tens of thousands of lives and displaced at least 14 million people.
