Argentina’s abrupt departure was ordered by the government in Buenos Aires.
President Javier Milei’s spokesman Manuel Adorni said this would give the new foreign minister, Gerardo Werthein, the opportunity to “reassess the situation and reflect on the position”.
Argentina’s President Javier Milei, who has previously called global warming a hoax, was due to meet US President-elect Donald Trump this week, who also denies climate change.
Trump withdrew the US from the Paris Agreement in 2017, but the decision was reversed by President Joe Biden. However, Trump has promised to withdraw the US from the climate agreement again when he becomes president again.
– If Milei’s government decides to withdraw from the Paris Agreement, it will have enormous legal and constitutional consequences, says Maximiliano Ferraro, who represents the opposition Civic Coalition party in the National Assembly.
Milei, who describes himself as an “anarcho-capitalist”, has taken radical measures to reduce inflation in the country. He has also downgraded the Ministry of Environmental Protection to a sub-secretariat and removed a fund for the protection of the country’s forests.
