The Legend Of Vox Machina Season 3 Review

In recent years, there has been a surge in animated series on streaming platforms, but one show that has truly captured everyone’s attention is Prime Video’s The Legend of Vox Machina. The first two seasons of the animated show turned out to be highly successful and garnered universal acclaim. However, with season 3, the Prime Video series goes much higher and takes viewers on a journey that’s filled with a lot of drama, emotions, humor, and epic battle sequences. If the first two seasons pushed the group closer to hell, season 3 will plunge them into its very depths.

The ending of Season 2 made fans realize that Vox Machina is about to go on a mission far more dangerous than all their previous ones. From the very first scene, Season 3 lays the foundation for what’s about to come and how the group is going to have a hard time tackling it. The stakes are higher this time around and if fans have any doubts about the direction of the story, they can be put to rest because it exceeds all expectations. It delivers on every aspect, whether it’s epic storytelling or brilliant animation. The Prime Video series is a testament to how animated series can be dark and yet so enjoyable.

Season 3 of Prime Video’s The Legend of Vox Machina begins with the brother-sister duo of Vex (voiced by Laura Bailey) and Vax (voiced by Liam O’Brien) taking a journey to find Thordak (voiced by Late Lance Reddick), an ancient Red dragon who is larger than most of the ancient dragons. Vax finds out that Thordak plans to rule the entire planet by defeating those who oppose him. However, that’s one of the problems that the group has to deal with. The other problem is the eggs that have been laid by Thordak. The Red Dragon is eagerly awaiting their hatching, ready for them to grow and join him in reclaiming control of the universe. Although Thordak gets to know about Vax’s presence, he manages to escape the dragon’s wrath and meet his sister. Later, it is revealed that the group got to know about Thordak’s whereabouts from Raishan, who told them about the dragon’s plans. All the members of the group are certainly looking forward to taking Raishan’s help, but Keyleth (voiced by Marisha Ray) is not one of them. She believes Raishan cannot be trusted and will eventually betray them. This introductory sequence to season 3 is more than enough to make people realize how difficult it would be for the group to defeat the villain this time.

As the season progresses, the group understands that things are only going to get worse because Thordak is a walking catastrophe. The group would need to have allies to beat the Red Dragon. Moreover, they would need a powerful Vestige named Plate of the Dawnmartyr to defeat the enemy. This grueling journey of procuring the vestige takes the group to places like Draconia and Ank’Harel. In the process, they meet some old nemesis and some good people as well. It’s worth noticing that season 3 of The Legend of Vox Machina is mostly about betrayal and its consequences. In the real world, betrayal can have profound and lasting consequences, impacting individuals emotionally, psychologically, and socially. That’s what happens in this Prime Video series as well. Whenever the group starts to feel assured about people, they backstab them and they are forced to fight them. The show does a phenomenal job in illustrating that betrayal has far-reaching consequences. Characters who betray others must grapple with the ramifications of their actions, including loss of friendships, personal guilt, and external conflicts.

However, not everything is darker this time around. In addition to the action-packed scenes, Season 3 delves deeply into blossoming romances and heartfelt storylines. The first two seasons made it clear that certain characters were bound to have romantic relationships. Interestingly, the third edition doesn’t keep these relationships in the background; instead, it brings them front and center. It is one of the many aspects that make this season different than its predecessors and a more compelling one. The dynamics between the characters seem to have changed, venturing into a space that feels both authentic and relatable. The romantic scenes ease the tension that’s rising throughout the episodes and enhance the viewing experience. The show balances humor and heart, making viewers care deeply about the characters’ fates.

One of the standout elements contributing to the success of this season is the stunning visuals that captivate the audience. Once again, the animation is beautifully crafted, with vivid colors, well-designed characters, and action scenes that are fluid and exciting. The battle sequences are breathtaking and bring the fantasy world to life. On the other hand, the original voice cast of Critical Role steals the show with their impeccable skill. Bailey, O’Brien, Ray, Taliesin Jaffe, Ashley Johnson, Sam Riegel, and Travis Willingham are brilliant in their respective roles. Their chemistry is a treat to watch and translates seamlessly into the show, taking it to a whole new level.

The Legend of Vox Machina has never shied away from dark themes like death, betrayal, and moral ambiguity. However, what sets it apart is how it masterfully blends humor and heartfelt moments, which prevents the narrative from becoming overwhelmingly grim. This balance allows the story to delve into serious subjects while still keeping the tone engaging and entertaining.

Overall, The Legend of Vox Machina gets bigger and better with season 3, telling an extraordinary story filled with remarkable elements. It is one of the very few shows that manages to show the story so effectively even when the duration of episodes remains between 24–27 minutes. The animation quality remains top-notch, and the action sequences are well-choreographed. Additionally, the show remains committed to being enthralling and emotional at the same time. The plot of the group facing formidable villains keeps viewers engaged, with clever twists and unexpected developments that keep the stakes high. It is a must-watch for the fans of the genre and remains to be a standout.
