Excerpts from the Pope’s new book were published on Sunday, and they contain some of the most critical remarks the Pope has made so far regarding Israel’s warfare on the Gaza Strip.
– We should carry out thorough investigations to assess whether this is in line with the technical definition of genocide as formulated by international lawyers and organisations, writes the Pope according to the extracts, which have been published by the newspaper La Stampa.
Israel denies that it is committing genocide in the Gaza Strip, and Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has not responded to an inquiry from Reuters to comment on the extract.
Israel is being investigated in the International Court of Justice in The Hague, which is the UN’s highest court. It is South Africa that in December last year took legal action against Israel with accusations that the country’s government is committing genocide against the Palestinians.
In January, the court ordered Israel to do everything to ensure that Israeli soldiers do not carry out acts that could contribute to a genocide. The court has not yet reached a conclusion on the accusation itself, and it may take several years to deal with the case.
