The news comes shortly after the announcement that special investigator Jack Smith asked a court to drop the indictment against Trump in the case that is about attempts to overturn the 2020 presidential election.
Trump’s election victory over Kamala Harris means that in practice he can no longer be prosecuted, in line with a decades-old legal statement from the Department of Justice.
In the so-called document case, prosecutors believed they could prove that Trump showed top-secret military attack plans to guests at his golf club. He also allegedly persuaded his lawyer to lie to the FBI about the many classified documents that were kept at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home.
