– On January 20, as one of my first presidential orders, will be to sign all necessary documents to impose a 25 percent tariff on all products coming to the United States from Mexico and Canada, writes the president-elect on his platform Truth Social.
The tariff must be maintained until the two countries clamp down on the flow of drugs, especially fentanyl, and migrants who illegally cross the border into the United States, he elaborates.
Trump says the same also applies to China. He warns of 10 percent tariffs on all goods from China until China stops the flow of fentanyl to the United States.
In the election campaign, tariffs on imported goods to the United States were one of his big issues. Trump then argued that tariffs are needed to strengthen the US economy and reduce dependence on foreign-made goods.
– No one can win a trade war or a tariff war, says a statement from the Chinese embassy in Washington after Trump’s announcement.
The embassy further states that economic and trade cooperation between the two countries is something that benefits both countries.
