Zamal still has the right to continue the electoral race, according to what his lawyer said Abdul Sattar Al Masoudi To Agence France-Presse, Tuesday.
Al-Masoudi said: “I ruled Court of First Instance in Tunis on Al-Ayashi Zamal He was sentenced to 12 years in prison in 4 cases, meaning 3 years for each case, and banned from voting, but he “remains concerned with the elections.”
Al-Masoudi had said last September 18 that the Jendouba court had sentenced Al-Ayashi to one year and 8 months in prison on charges of “fabrication of documents and fraudulent popular endorsements,” about 3 weeks before the elections.
The police arrested Zamal two weeks ago, and his lawyer says he faces more than 30 cases.
Abdel Sattar Al Masoudi, Zamal’s lawyer, told Reuters, “The ruling is political and unfair, and aims to harm his chances in the presidential race.”
And it was Tunisian police Zamal was arrested on suspicion of involvement in forging popular endorsements.
Zamal is one of only 3 candidates whom the Election Commission decided to allow to run in the elections scheduled for October 6 alongside the president Qais Saeed And the politician Zuhair Al-Maghzawi.
Zamal categorically denied the accusations and said that he was being subjected to “restrictions and intimidation” because he was a serious competitor to Saeed.
