President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said that one of the aims of the surprise attack on the other side of the border has been to bring in new prisoners of war in exchange for Ukrainians captured by the Russian authorities.
Russia and Ukraine carry out regular prisoner exchanges. Russian military officials and bloggers claim that Russia has pushed Ukrainian forces back from Kursk.
Ukraine said this week that it had attacked North Korean soldiers in Kursk for the first time.
Intelligence from, among others, South Korea, the USA and Ukraine indicates that 12,000 North Korean soldiers are deployed in Russia. It had been expected that they would be sent to the border region of Kursk. Russia has not confirmed or denied the information.
