Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre (Ap) has invited the parliamentary leaders at the Storting to a meeting about the Ukraine aid at 10 am.
The meeting agenda is a broad political agreement on the Nansen program going forward, Støre told NTB when the meeting became known earlier this month.
Next year, 15 billion has been set aside in the state budget for Ukraine support. However, the opposition has believed that this is far too little. The Conservative Party has believed that the support should be tripled to NOK 45 billion, while the MDG has asked for NOK 65 billion more. The Liberal Party will give NOK 105 billion. KrF has also said that support should increase significantly, while at the same time warning against the parties outbidding each other in the media.
The head of the Storting’s foreign affairs and defense committee, Ine Eriksen Søreide (H), expects the government to come to the meeting with a significant increase in aid to Ukraine.
– The government itself has asked the parties to come up with proposals in their alternative budgets. We have now done that, and then we expect the government to respond to the signals that support must be increased. The right believes that the government’s proposal to reduce aid from 27 billion in 2024 to 15 billion in 2025 sends completely the wrong signals to both Ukraine and Putin, says Søreide.
