Xbox Reveals New Ghost Cipher Controller

Key Takeaways

  • Xbox has released the Ghost Cipher controller for pre-order, aiming to appeal to nostalgia with a transparent design.
  • The Ghost Cipher controller launches on October 8 for $69.99, sporting a gray, bronze, and silver color scheme.
  • Xbox Design Lab now offers custom see-through designs for Elite Series 2 controllers as well.

Xbox has officially announced the Ghost Cipher controller, the latest in the company’s line of transparent controllers. Transparent technology was a big fad in the late 90s and early 2000s, and so Xbox is clearly trying to appeal to nostalgia with its latest line of controllers.

The first controller released as part of Xbox’s Cipher line was the Sky Cipher controller. Sky Cipher launched last August with a blue translucent shell. Now yet another see-through controller is up for grabs, with Xbox gamers able to pre-order the Ghost Cipher controller right now through the Microsoft Store.

Confirming previous leaks, the Xbox Ghost Cipher controller will launch on October 8. Retailing for $69.99, the Ghost Cipher controller is gray, bronze, and silver in color. It is the same as any other standard Xbox controller in terms of functionality, but its unique look certainly helps it stand out. The Ghost Cipher controller definitely looks pretty sleek, but those that would rather go with a different color can do so through the Xbox Design Lab.

Xbox Ghost Cipher Controller Price and Release Date

  • Release Date: October 8
  • Price: $69.99

Alongside the reveal of the Ghost Cipher controller, Xbox confirmed new options for Xbox Design Lab, which lets gamers create their very own controllers. Sticking with the see-through theme, Xbox Design Lab is letting gamers customize an Elite Series 2 controller with the option of Ghost Cipher, Velocity Cipher (green), Astral Cipher (purple), Surf Cipher (blue), Candy Cipher (pink), and Pulse Cipher (red) options. For now, these options are only available through Xbox Design Lab. No plans to give them official releases have been announced so far, with those options limited to the Ghost Cipher and Sky Cipher controllers. But if Ghost and Sky prove popular enough, one has to imagine that the other controllers in the Cipher line will make their way to retail, even if it’s through a standard Xbox controller and not the Elite Series 2.

To go with their custom Elite Series 2 controllers, Xbox fans can also pick up special chromatic D-pad and rear paddles, with the choice between Energy Chroma and Sunset Chroma. The former features a green, blue, yellow, and magenta design, while the latter uses yellow and bright pink. These will add on to the controller’s price, though, so fans should keep that in mind.

Xbox likes to release new controller colors on a regular basis, and so it’s highly likely that even more are on the way in the near future. In fact, next-generation Xbox consoles are confirmed to be in development, and chances are good that they will launch with redesigned controllers. Then again, it’s also possible Xbox will stick with the Series X/S style of controllers. Fans will just have to wait and see on that front.
